So what is bad about San Angelo? We are between
two interstates - pretty much a 100 miles between making us
isolated from 'big City life'. We are on the cusp of the Hill
Country but not so far as to be desolate! The water is considered
"hard" but Mother told me "a little calcium is good
for you" so I drink it - just don't rely on it to make
vegetables grow. We have clay soil mostly which has to be tended
to if you are planning to grow anything! We do have mosquitoes
but, if you remember to spray, you save the day and later don't
pay with all that itching! We have an abundance of deer in the
surrounding rural hills so it is advised not to travel after dark
on the lonely roads between Abilene and San Angelo because you are
bound to hit one.
Once you are in town, stop at the Visitors Center
along the Concho River. You will see volunteers there. And, you
will see the Concho River with the child-friendly park built by
volunteers. You will see people walking, actually talking to
each other and a wonderful view of downtown. Welcome to San
Angelo!
Editor's Notes:
San Angelo's population is 90,000 people; 20% are age 45 to 64,
and 14% are 65 years of age or better.
The average home price is $140,000. Most growth is
occurring on the southern side of the city; here the average price
is $185,000. The property tax rate is 2.9 per $100 of
assessed value, but the homestead exemption is $15,000 plus
$10,000 for homeowners age 65 and better. The overall
cost of living is 10% to 15% below the national average.
San Angelo's crime rate is slightly above the national average,
but most crimes are property related.
The Santa Fe Crossing Senior Center provides a
place for those 55 and above to socialize and stay active.
