Retirement living is diversified.  There are planned adult communities and life estates. There are patio homes and condos. And, there is no reason to be bored if you are retired since volunteer opportunities are plentiful. Organizations like Keep San Angelo Beautiful and Meals for the Elderly are two of the most popular. However, there are crisis centers and small sewing groups, too. The Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, Junior League, and Masons also thrive in this community.

Transportation around town is excellent with bus service to the mall, Walmart and downtown. The buses look like trolley cars! Airport? We have a regional one currently being expanded with American Eagle flights into Dallas and Continental into Houston. If you want, you can arrange for van transportation (daily) into Midland-Odessa to catch Southwest or other flights. Churches are predominantly Baptist and Church of Christ with a healthy population of Roman Catholic. Each immerse themselves in assisting those in need with monthly lunches, soup kitchens and a hand up when contacted.

So what is bad about San Angelo? We are between two interstates - pretty much a 100 miles between making us isolated from 'big City life'. We are on the cusp of the Hill Country but not so far as to be desolate! The water is considered "hard" but Mother told me "a little calcium is good for you" so I drink it - just don't rely on it to make vegetables grow. We have clay soil mostly which has to be tended to if you are planning to grow anything! We do have mosquitoes but, if you remember to spray, you save the day and later don't pay with all that itching! We have an abundance of deer in the surrounding rural hills so it is advised not to travel after dark on the lonely roads between Abilene and San Angelo because you are bound to hit one.

Once you are in town, stop at the Visitors Center along the Concho River. You will see volunteers there. And, you will see the Concho River with the child-friendly park built by volunteers.  You will see people walking, actually talking to each other and a wonderful view of downtown. Welcome to San Angelo!

Editor's Notes:

San Angelo's population is 90,000 people; 20% are age 45 to 64, and 14% are 65 years of age or better.

The average home price is $140,000.  Most growth is occurring on the southern side of the city; here the average price is $185,000.  The property tax rate is 2.9 per $100 of assessed value, but the homestead exemption is $15,000 plus $10,000 for homeowners age 65 and better.   The overall cost of living is 10% to 15% below the national average.

San Angelo's crime rate is slightly above the national average, but most crimes are property related.

The Santa Fe Crossing Senior Center provides a place for those 55 and above to socialize and stay active.
