The residents of Ojai, including some celebrities and
other Hollywood types, have
vowed to limit growth in order to maintain their quality of
living, and as a result, real estate is expensive, although
some alternatives exist. Most homes are elegant
Spanish Mission architecture country estates on several acres of land, but there are also
ten manufactured home communities with Ojai addresses.
Two of these are Country Village Mobile Home Park, a small
development (24 homes) that was built in 1940 and attracts
families and retirees (805-649-2595), and Golden Oaks Mobile Estates, a senior community with 100
sites, a pool and a clubhouse (805-646-2412).
Prices for manufactured homes start at around $95,000, but
homes do not come up for sale often (and sell quickly when
they do).

There are two condominium developments, the
Hitching Post and Creekside, and these occasionally have units for
sale or rent. In fact, the Hitching Post currently has a
semi-furnished, one bedroom, one bath unit for lease for $1,450 a
month and a two bedroom, two bath unit for $1,750 a
month. One to two bedroom apartments usually rent for
$1,100 to $1,350 per month (and higher), and there are a fair
number available considering the size of Ojai and the surrounding
area (32,000 people). Guest homes and town homes are
also for rent. La Amistad is a brand new, high-end
town home development with units for sale starting at $1.3 million
for 2,700 square feet.
Otherwise, Ojai has a number of single-family home
developments, including Saddle Mountain, Persimmon Hill and the
Arbolad, although no age-restricted or age-targeted communities
per se. Most homes are in the million dollar range and
up, but there are those in the $550,000-$800,000 range, too, and
the occasional, lonely $395,000 home (1,000 square feet on two
acres). Obviously, residents are paying for the privilege of
living in such a beautiful area, and most single family homes come
with swimming pools, expansive lawns and sizeable acreage. Ojai also
has a number of independent and assisted living facilities, including The Gable
of Ojai Retirement Home, West Oaks-Personal Care Home
Retirement Home, Mountain Vista Manor and Royal Gardens of Ojai.

Ojai has long been known as a place to
regenerate and relax (several renowned spas are located
here). It is home to well-known writers, painters,
photographers, craftsmen and has a
strong environmental outlook. Mature trees are protected
(huge oaks and sycamores are everywhere); open spaces flourish,
and commercial and residential growth are deliberately
limited. Roses bloom year round; coastal air invites
daydreaming; evening sun bathes the Valley in a pink glow (known
as the "pink moment"), and romantic architectural styles
reminds one of being on the Mediterranean. This
is indeed a magical place, and residents work to keep it that way.
And while Ojai attracts all ages, it does have a
visible retiree and pre-retiree population and an extensive
seniors program, known as HELP and RSVP, "designed
to tap into the wealth of talent and expertise accumulated by
persons over the age of 55 years." Currently, these programs
have more than five hundred registered volunteers and
opportunities to get involved at more than fifty events and
activities. They also have a volunteer corps that regularly
telephones, visits and provides support to seniors who may be
feeling isolated or need assistance.
